Commonly referred to as the African Caribbean, Cape Verde and dozens of surrounding islands are home to the best beaches on this side of the Atlantic.
The African Caribbean
Cape Verde is an archipelago island off the west coast of Africa. It is a former Portuguese colony and its influence is still strong locally. It is an excellent choice for anyone looking for a peaceful and private getaway. Once here, you can enjoy a range of water sports, try some island hopping, experience the thrill of surfing, swimming, hiking or simply relax on sun-drenched beaches…
Cape Verde consists of 10 volcanic islands and five islets. Escudo is the local currency although the Euro is also widely accepted.
There are two airports: Praia and Rabil International Airport (located on Boa Vista Island). Transportation in Cape Verde is unique as it is based on a ferry system linking the 10 islands together and providing tourists with a fast and affordable way to visit each territory.
If you wonder if it’s the right time to book in Cape Verde, our answer is YES! Rain is rare in Cape Verde and there’s no winter season. The ‘wet’ season is only from August to October and stops just as quickly as it starts. The average temperature is around a toasty 26°C all year round. August and September are the hottest months.
Cape Verde archipelago
Sal has a glowing reputation among surfers who long ago discovered the appeal of the gorgeous Cape Verde coastline. Perfect for beach holidays, Sal is the most developed (and arguably the most attractive) island in the group. Head into Santa Maria in the evenings to enjoy a mix of top quality restaurants and live music bars.
Santiago is the largest island in Cape Verde (home to over half the population of the islands) and it has the most to offer in the way of accommodation and excursions. Keen walkers can explore its fertile mountains and dry steppes, while beach lovers can relax on pristine, sunny beaches, or explore colourful marketplaces. Santiago has an international airport in the capital city, Praia.
Sao Vicente Home to the cultural capital, Mindelo, São Vicente is a wonderful place to appreciate the sound of world-famous Cape Verdean music known as Morna, which is similar to Portuguese Fado music. Visiting this small island (which is also popular among windsurfers and hikers) gives tourists a perfect mix of culture, mountainous scenery and serenity.
Boa Vista Less developed than the larger islands, Boa Vista is a fantastic place to unwind from the stresses of work and school. 35 miles of glittering white-sand coastline provide beautiful settings for long walks on the beach, interrupted occasionally by pastel-coloured villages where you can sit back with a cool drink.
